Tilaye Gebre - Tilayes Saxophone With The Dahlak Band 24-48  (2026)



Saxophonist Tilaye Gebre was one of the stalwarts of Addis Ababa’s popular music scene from the 1960s to the 1980s, his sound a highly influential part of important groups such as Walias Band and The Equators (later the Dahlak Band). This album from the late 1970s – reissued now on Ethiopian-Swedish label Muzikawi – is made with the classic Dahlak Band line-up, and although the band were usually heard accompanying the hottest singers of the day, here they are all-instrumental, with Tilaye himself taking up the role of frontman. Dreamy is the keyword here: Tilaye’s deliciously warm tenor saxophone drifts through gentle, flowing soul and light reggae, relaxing and nostalgic.
